final thoughts about hakimi situation

i keep seeing people talking about innocent until proven guilty when it relates to him, or say they’re not going to support him until he’s proven innocent.

let me remind all of you something about rape and the justice system.

rape is famously extremely difficult to prove in a court of law. it’s very difficult for victims to come forward because it’s traumatizing for them, and many of them don’t want to relive their trauma in a long court case. police officers won’t move forward with an investigation if there’s no evidence, so it’s difficult to even bring a case to court.

however, it’s even harder to even prove it. most felony convictions won’t be given out without direct evidence. for a rape case this would mean DNA evidence. (i’m sure everyone knows what that entails.) many victims will want to wash off evidence because of the severe trauma they’re under, and many will not go to the ER and receive a rape kit. they will instead have circumstantial evidence (they were at my house at this time, we interacted at xyz). but circumstantial evidence cannot alone be used to find someone guilty.

so even if someone is found not guilty. they are not proven innocent. there simply wasn’t enough evidence to prove their guilt. the only way to prove innocence is to have an extremely credible alibi (in which case the person likely won’t even be arrested let alone tried) or to prove that someone else did it.

keep this in mind when you talk about proving innocence. personally, i’ll never look at achraf hakimi the same way again.
